The Fourth Grade Pod is named for the Keweenaw Bay in Michigan's most northern peninsula. This region's history is long and rich. Bishop Baraga, known as the "Snowshoe Priest" set up his mission in 1843 along these waters. Furs and fish figured prominently in the bay's early history as a source of economic wealth until later years when lumbering took over. The bay is sheltered from the prevailing westerly winds that flow across the peninsula. The coastline is mostly rocky which creates very picturesque shorelines.
