On December 11, 2004, Chippewa Valley School voters overwhelmingly approved a $168 million capital improvement program that included the construction of the new Seneca Middle School, the Little Turtle Early Childhood Center, the new Dakota High School Ninth Grade Center, as well as classroom additions and improvements at the middle school level.  This bond proposal has also allowed us to make major building improvements like new roofs, paving and sidewalk replacement, and updated security systems at some of our schools.  State-of-the-art technology and new buses have been purchased.  Part of the bond program included the future planning and purchase of land for educational use.  We are now in the final phases of this comprehensive capital improvement program and we are very pleased to report that all of our projects are on time and within budget.   If you would like more information regarding bond improvements taking place within our schools please contact the Community Relations Department at 586-723-2242.  Here is a list of our current projects for your review…

Macomb Township Property Purchase:  22 Mile Road and Garfield Road - The purchase of land for future educational use is an important part of a growing school district’s strategic plan.  As one of the few school districts still experiencing enrollment growth, Chippewa Valley needs to continually assess and plan for our future facility needs.  In the past, our school district has been faced with a shortage of available land space whenever the need for a new school or academic facility arose.  Part of the 2004 bond proposal approved by our residents included the acquisition of land for future educational use.  The funding for this future land purchase is specifically earmarked in our bond proposal and approved by the state.

In keeping with that plan, we have purchased 7 acres of land in Macomb Township which will now allow the district the first right of refusal for an adjacent 40 acres of land at a later date.    Local factors including Michigan’s economic recovery will determine whether or not the district will need to purchase the remaining land to accommodate a specialized educational facility or a future school building site. Chippewa Valley Schools has 15,500 students today but we still have the capacity to grow significantly once our local infrastructure is completely developed.    In the meantime we are exploring the feasibility of developing the current 7 acres of land into a hands-on learning opportunity for our Career and Technical Education Building Trades Program.   Check back for future updates on this important planning initiative!

Elementary Schools - Baseball field improvements will be done at the elementary schools. The work will be bid in the spring. Construction will start after the little leagues are over and be completed by this fall.

Miami Elementary - Wall tile was installed in four toilet rooms over the holiday break.

Huron, Miami, Ojibwa, Shawnee, Sequoyah, Cheyenne - Secure entrances will be created at these buildings this summer. The project will be bid in March.

Cherokee, Clinton Valley, Miami - Roof replacement will be bid in March and completed this summer.

Technology - Elementary computers will be replaced at 10 schools during the school year on second shift.

Iroquois Middle School - The classroom addition is complete and was moved into over the winter break. The contractors are currently completing the punch list for this area. The demolition contractor completed their demolition for the next phase of work that includes the office renovation, creation of a second computer lab and the installation of the remaining folding walls between classrooms to allow more opportunities for team teaching.

Seneca Middle School - A wall was constructed between the choir rooms to help reduce noise transfer between the rooms. Exterior doors were installed in the choir rooms to create a second means of emergency egress. Exterior concrete stoops will be poured at these doors in the spring.

Algonquin Middle School - New sound panels will be installed in the band and choirs rooms in January. The rooms were painted and prepped for the panels over the holiday break.

CVHS - Concrete will be replaced at the walkway between CVHS & CVHS-9 this summer.
Approximately one third of the roof (main gym, auxiliary gym and kitchen areas) will be replaced this summer. This work will be bid in February.

Dakota High School - Some of the existing plumbing fixtures will be replaced this summer with more energy efficient fixtures. The drinking fountains will also be replaced with a heavy duty model that is less susceptible to vandalism. Existing masonry walls will be reworked at several locations to eliminate leaks. Interior spaces will be renovated for the LCCE program. This work will be bid in March.

Administration Building - The main parking lot, a portion of the exterior windows and the roof will be replaced this spring/summer. This work will be bid in February. The computers in the building will be replaced this spring/summer.
